Chidyapur Vegetable Market
SET ALONG THE HARIDWAR HIGHWAY AT CHIDIYAPUR, THE PROJECT COMBINES A BAMBOO WAYSIDE MARKET AND CAFETERIA AROUND GREEN COURTYARDS, PROMOTING LOCAL PRODUCE, COMMUNITY LIVELIHOODS AND SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION.
BAMBOO, THATCH AND LIGHT
Two bamboo wings curve around each other in an S-shape, each wrapped around its own courtyard. Above them, a two-sided thatch roof is split by a skylight that lets light and air into both wings. Bamboo screens shade the honey display and jack arches roof the washrooms, so the building itself shows how much bamboo can do.
A PAUSE ON THE HIGHWAY
Set just off the Haridwar highway, the site opens from the parking area onto two courtyards. The semi-open cafeteria looks onto open-air seating set around an existing tree. The market wing wraps around a landscaped courtyard with organic seating and the honey tasting and display area sits where the two wings meet. Both courtyards take the overflow from the indoor spaces, so the whole site works as a public stopover and not just a roadside stall.
FROM FIELD TO TABLE
The vegetable market gives farmers from nearby villages a direct outlet to highway customers. It will be run by a local self-help group or a society formed for the purpose. The cafeteria will be run by DTDC Haridwar or leased by it to a private operator, which gives the centre a steady income. Storage, billing and waste collection are built into the plan, so the centre is set up to sustain itself and to serve as a model for bamboo construction in the region.
