Eight partners, one endeavor and innumerable possibilities

Inception

Our journey can be traced back to the CEPT Campus in Ahmedabad, where we developed a lens to view the world as architects and designers. These formative years instilled a deep sensitivity towards the built environment and taught us to derive meaning from our early explorations, so much so that it became a habit.

As we approached our final year, our conversations revealed an opportunity to respond more meaningfully to real-world challenges that were often left unexplored in favour of safer, conventional approaches. Guided by a shared intent to apply our learning on the ground, we came together as a team and developed proposals for the surrounding villages of Ahmedabad with for the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority.
‍
These early collaborations laid the foundation for Compartment S4. In 2017, we formally established our Ahmedabad studio, setting this journey into momentum.

Alignment

Working on public projects across urban and rural contexts deepened our understanding of people-centred design. Building alongside artisans, using local materials and engaging in traditional practices through our Handmade Workshops led to a defining realisation: meaningful change emerges from bottom-up processes where design catalyses systems and communities through empathy and participation.

In parallel, these early years marked the formalisation of Compartment S4, alongside explorations of the built environment across typologies, scales and contexts. These included concepts around community seating, passive cooling, natural material palettes and urban design typologies. The sectors ranged from private projects such as bespoke residential and cafe interiors to high-density contexts like the street design along Mumbai’s Nepean Sea Road, and community-led tourism initiatives in Uttarakhand. Each project added a new layer of understanding.

Throughout this time, our collective spirit grew stronger, carried across cities through daily exchanges, shared challenges and inside jokes. We introduced Friday Night Conversations as a weekly ritual, inviting creative practitioners from allied disciplines to spark dialogue beyond architectural boundaries.

Disruption

The pandemic brought uncertainty, limited resources and moments of pause. Yet it also revealed our resilience, as we regained our rhythm by connecting virtually from our individual homes. It became an opportunity to reflect, strengthen internal systems, optimize workflows, explore verticals and formalise structures to build a more agile, scalable practice. Above all, we realised the true value of eight and how the collective expertise allows us to take on multiple challenges simultaneously.

We continued to build our collective strength by expanding our skill-set, initiating more public dialogue in and around our neighbourhoods and building networks in the Indian and international fraternity. The pause helped us align processes and launch our Mumbai office in 2020.

Recalibration

In 2021 we launched UnMute, an in-house magazine that reflects on the evolving realities of creative practice, offering thoughtful perspectives on design, society and the futures we envision.

Our Bengaluru studio, established in 2023, became another vital node in our growing network, bringing Compartment S4’s presence to three Indian cities. Beyond the studio locations, our work quietly lives across diverse regions and communities in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Assam, among others.

Over these years, we have become equipped with advanced mapping and data collection tools which have increasingly helped us in arriving at data driven design solutions. With 30+ architects, designers, planners and researchers on the team, we are a force of creativity, detailed execution and thorough research. We nurtured the spark of an idea to a full fledged cross-disciplinary firm that holds the capability to respond to design challenges for every need and scale.

All this because we took our chances, held our ground and trusted the instinct that to match the scale at which we dream, we need nothing less than the strength of eight. Inspired by the conscience that set us in motion, the journey continues, rooted in empathy and driven by the will to create meaningful impact - one idea, one structure, one community at a time.

And before you can ask -

What’s with the name?

The name Compartment S4 is borrowed from the coaches of the Indian Railways that crisscross the country, spaces of movement, multiplicity and coexistence. We draw inspiration from the crackling energy of the railways that settles into shared comfort, while being in constant motion across the length and breadth of India, every day.

Do the eight of you always agree on everything?

Not at all—and that’s the point. We do not shy from disagreement, as it is the true test of our synergy. We debate to distill opinion, removing bias and arriving at a decision everyone can stand behind. Through the years, we intuitively turn to the subject matter experts in our team, respecting their lived experience to guide us.

How do eight people make one decision?

Through conversation, critical thinking, and a lot of listening. Rather than strict hierarchy, our decisions emerge through collective clarity rather than quick votes.

How many people can actually fit in Compartment S4?

As many as the journey demands. Compartment S4 expands to include collaborators, professionals from allied fields, craftsmen, students, consultants, and communities, our doors are always open for those who share our values and vision.

How do you work across three cities?

By connecting through our core beliefs and the joy of creating, rather than proximity. Each studio operates independently day to day, while our playbooks, conversations, and decisions remain collective—helped along by regular check-ins, travel, off-sites and robust communication.

How many WhatsApp groups does CS4 have?

Enough to stay connected, never enough to stay quiet. Some are for work, some for logistics, some for debates, and some that probably shouldn’t exist—but all of them keep the conversation going, every minute of every day.
