PROGRAMME AND MATERIAL EXPLORATION

The project title, 'वक्र वन', loosely translates to Circles in a Forest in English. Appropriately, the project is conceptualised with the intent of encircling different pockets of activities in an urban forest. Located in the heart of Pune’s urban fabric, the project provides an essential public open space for everyday recreation, social gatherings and larger community celebrations designed for diverse age groups. Bamboo’s compressive strength, lightweight nature, flexibility and rapid growth make it a versatile and sustainable building material. Its adaptability enables organic forms that respond to existing trees and landscapes, minimising ecological disturbance. The project explores bamboo’s structural and sculptural potential. Vakra Van sets a precedent for bamboo as a robust, sustainable material in public .

URBAN PARK WITH SCULPTURAL BAMBOO STRUCTURES

Rather than functioning as isolated buildings, the bamboo structures become sculptural elements integrated into the landscape, framing views, defining gathering spaces and encouraging exploration. Together, they create a ‘natural bamboo spectacle’, transforming an everyday urban park into a distinctive public experience where architecture, nature and community life coexist. The park accommodates a pavilion, amphitheatre, children’s play area, elderly seating spaces, open gym, public toilets and a souvenir shop selling bamboo products. A winding pathway follows the stream, connecting activity zones while creating intimate seating pockets among existing trees. Bridges across the stream enhance connectivity and offer serene views of the landscape.
