GIRI TAAL, REIMAGINED AS A LIVING URBAN ECOSYSTEM WITH AN INCLUSIVE LAKE EDGE, CONTEXTUAL PUBLIC SPACES, NATURAL WATER FILTRATION AND RENEWED COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS TO WATER AND NATURE

A LANDSCAPE UNDER PRESSURE

Giri Taal is a natural lake in Kashipur dating back to the Pandava era, historically connected to local agriculture and the town’s water systems. The mature grove surrounding Giri Taal supports birds, bat colonies and other wildlife, while aquatic and riparian vegetation provides habitat for a range of species. The landscape strategy seeks to protect and strengthen these existing ecological relationships. Over time, encroachment, water chestnut farming on the fringes, unplanned development and neglected infrastructure have disrupted its inlets and outlets. The challenge was not simply to improve the lake’s appearance, but to restore its ecological function while reconnecting it with the life of the town.

WORKING WITH WATER, NOT JUST ITS EDGE

The proposal looks beyond the visible water surface to address the lake’s capacity, water quality and ecological functioning. Dredging, removal of invasive water hyacinth, a bioswale belt and natural filtration were intended to improve water retention and water quality. Together, these interventions approach the lake as a living water system rather than an isolated landscape feature. A continuous, pedestrian-friendly lake edge creates opportunities for people to experience the water and its surrounding landscape. Improvements to the temple precincts and adjoining open spaces provide places for gathering, pause and community activity.

A LAKEFRONT FOR EVERY GENERATION

The masterplan divides the lake precinct into distinct zones shaped by users, activities and group sizes. Pedestrian pathways, a flowering plaza, children’s play area, amphitheatre that doubles as a weekend market, interpretation centre and public open spaces create varied ways to engage with the lake. Together, these interventions balance public life with ecological restoration, reconnecting Giri Taal with the people of Kashipur.
