Ganesh Talav
FROM FESTIVE IMMERSIONTO EVERYDAY RECREATION, REIMAGINING GANESH TALAV AS A VIBRANT NEIGHBOURHOODLANDMARK CELEBRATING SPIRITUALITY, CULTURE AND COMMUNITY LIFE
REVIVING A CULTURAL TANK
Located in the busy neighbourhood of Mulund East, Mumbai, Ganesh Talav is a significant public tank deeply associated with Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Beyond its religious importance, it serves as a valuable open space within the dense urban fabric. The project reimagines the tank and its surroundings as a welcoming public destination, preserving its cultural identity while enhancing accessibility, community interaction and opportunities for everyday recreation.
DESIGNING FOR RITUAL AND RECREATION
The programme brings together essential facilities for Ganesh Visarjan and everyday public activities. Stepped ghats, an accessible immersion ramp, gathering spaces and a dedicated ramp for post-visarjan tank cleaning support the festival’s rituals and maintenance. An arched pavilion, landscaped promenade, shaded seating, children’s play area, mini amphitheatre and public amenities encourage year-round use. Together, these interventions enhance the spiritual experience of immersion while establishing a lively and inclusive neighbourhood public space.
FROM SPIRITUAL PROCESSIONS TO EVERYDAY PUBLIC LIFE
Ganesh Talav is envisioned as a space that transforms with the city’s cultural rhythms. During Ganesh Chaturthi, the entrance pavilion, processional pathways and stepped ghats create a dignified, collective and spiritual visarjan experience. Dedicated access for post-visarjan cleaning ensures the tank can be maintained and restored after celebrations. Throughout the year, these same spaces become places for walking, playing, resting and gathering, allowing the project to serve both the neighbourhood’s everyday needs and its cultural traditions.
